Apple Trees - photo ©Steve Cook, late 2005
This photo of the old cottage named 'Apple Trees", situated between the two pubs "The Prince of Wales" (William Bray) and "The White Horse" pubs. Many thanks to Steve Cook, who took this photo just before the land was cleared.
"The place had stood empty for quite a while after the death of Mr Clover and in this picture is rather overgrown. The garden in its day was one of the highlights of the Shere Open gardens event. The garden was amazing. Mr Clover had someone in to look after it when his wife was taken ill. He was quite a character, my then next door neighbour John Puttock and I were on the emergency call out and many a time we had to go and pick him up after he had slid out of his chair onto the floor.
As far as I can recall the picture would have been taken late 2005 or early 2006. The picture shows a new looking fence that lines the drive up to the car park. There used to be a very high hedge and tree lining to the drive that would have hidden the garden from view"

TODAY - The homes built on the land of "Apple Trees" are called "Hop Gardens" - Special thanks Steve for sharing this with us.

Shere Car Park

Client: Guildford Borough Council

Challenge: Construct an environmentally-friendly visitors car park

Result: After many years of debate among the interested parties, including the Local Parish Council, National Heritage, and the Borough council, our company won the contract to construct a visitors car park at the historic Shere Park heritage site.

The scheme was technically challenging due to the environmental considerations involved in the works. The car park had to be constructed using permeable materials that would be suitable for both commercial vehicles and visitors cars.  We recommended an Aquagrid Environmental System and then imported specialised granite stone chippings of various size and colour.  The project was completed on time with a formal opening and attendance of local dignitaries and large amount of press coverage.

Inspired by Victors photo, I managed to locate a photo of the entrance to the tunnel

John Evelyn, the 17th Century diarist and landscape gardener who lived at Wotton, a few miles East of Albury Park
laid out the Albury pleasure grounds for Henry Howard, later 6th Duke of Norfolk.
His work included a Yew Walk and fine terraces a quarter of a mile long, with a tunnel through the hill under Silver Wood.

Photo copyright Victor Keech "Albury Park mansion has a tunnel at the back of a water feature, cut through sandstone,
which emerges near the village of Shere. Usually locked and gated, today you could tred its sandy path in the pitch dark"

Shere Museum

Shere Museum

SHERE has it's own museum - situated in Upper Street...

Shere Museum

... next to the Village Hall.

Shere Museum is now housed in the original Shere Parish Hall which was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1898. When the men of Shere returned from serving in the First World War the parish wished to honour them, by completing the present Village Hall in 1922. The Parish Hall became available for The Shere Working Men's Club.

During this history, the building was bombed in the Second World War but was rebuilt.

The Shere Working Men's Club closed in 1997 and the hall lay empty until 2006 when a team of volunteers started work on converting the building to house the museum collection.

In 2009, after 25 years as a collection in a private house (The Maltings), the museum opened its doors!

WEBSITE

*please note that the museum has moved from 'The Malt House' in Shere Lane to Upper Street

Previously, the Museum was housed at The Maltings in Shere Lane.

Shere Museum opened in the Old Malt House as a one-day event in 1984, part of Shere's annual "Fair in the Square". The core of the exhibition came from an accumulation of domestic and agricultural items left by the previous owners.

Carols in the Square 2016

Many thanks to Seb Guettier for sending in the above photo of 'Carols in the Square'.
Seb: "I was visiting my Mum and Sister who live in Farley Green and Chilworth respectively, this Christmas. I was delighted to attend the carol service, and have a couple of drinks in the White Horse afterwards. What a lovely village-y Christmas Eve."
